Global Employee Health, Global Benefits and Global Population Health work closely together to provide a wide range of health and wellness services and work-life programs to our employees, retirees and their covered dependents.
We apply the principles that support population health. As depicted in the image below, we strive to help our employees achieve holistic health and wellness. This means:
- Keeping the healthy well
- Helping employees to engage in healthy behaviors-not risky behaviors
- Ensuring that those with acute illness have access to convenient and efficient care
- Supporting employees with chronic conditions to make healthful choices and mitigate the progression of those conditions
- Connecting employees who experience complex or catastrophic health issues with high-quality care or centers of excellence
We continuously monitor the health of our U.S.-based employee population and their dependents to ensure that we are offering the right balance of programs, resources and tools that support good health and wellness.
We strive to offer services and programs and to create work environments that address the continuum of population health management—for those who are well, those at risk, those with acute or chronic illnesses and those requiring highly complex care.

Our employee wellbeing mission is to optimize a culture of health, wellness and safety. Employers that have invested in building a culture of wellbeing through integrated policies, programs, and environmental cues reap the benefits of a healthier workforce. Our company committed to this by making the healthy choice the easy choice and by ensuring that health and safety is considered in every aspect of daily life at work.
Evidence shows that employers with a benchmark culture of health can reduce health care spending, improve employee engagement, boost productivity, prevent injuries, and improve overall corporate performance. We are committed to advancing our culture of wellbeing as a business imperative, with measurable improvement in targeted areas and where the company’s employee and family health status is improved.
As part of our commitment to becoming a leader in employee health and wellbeing, our health and wellness offerings are captured under one over-arching program called LIVE IT.
LIVE IT is a continuum of domains that support a culture of wellbeing and include preventive health (PREVENT IT), emotional and financial wellbeing (BALANCE IT), physical fitness (MOVE IT) and nutrition (FUEL IT). Together, these domains work synergistically towards a holistic approach to health. The LIVE IT platform provides a broad array of resources within each of these domains to enhance the lives of our employees. LIVE IT was launched in the United States in 2011 and today is available in every country in which we have employees.
One way to enrich the health of our employees is through the design of our workplace. With the construction of our new Research Laboratories building in South San Francisco, California, we placed special attention on creating a work environment that embraces the principles of LIVE IT. We made the decision to construct the building in accordance with the WELL Building Standard™ (WELL™) and plan to receive Silver Certification in 2020. We also received Gold Certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in 2020. This holistic approach in building design further makes the healthy choice the easy choice for our employees and guests at our worksites.
Preventive health (PREVENT IT)
Through our PREVENT IT pillar, we provide employees with programs and resources to help keep them well including vaccination clinics, cancer and biometric screenings, a commitment to tobacco-free worksites, plus more. After all, when employees are healthy, they can focus on our company’s mission to save and improve the lives of patients around the world. Initiatives include:
We are committed to providing all employees, contractors and guests with healthy and safe work environments. Since smoking and second-hand smoke are known to cause lung disease, heart conditions and cancer, our goal is to be a tobacco-free company globally by the end of 2020. We are making progress toward this goal. As of 2019, 100 percent of U.S. locations are tobacco free. Our global tobacco-free task force, which includes representatives from facilities, human resources and population health, works with local markets to help them in this endeavor and to assist them with providing resources for tobacco cessation, using our global policy as the guide. This policy prohibits the use of all tobacco products including oral tobaccos and e-cigarettes on company property including outdoor spaces, parking areas and in company vehicles.
Onsite wellness clinics
Most of our larger U.S. sites offer onsite health clinics that provide an array of services to help our employees stay or get well. Many offer employees the opportunity for lipid, blood glucose and other laboratory and biometric screenings and services, vaccinations and travel medicine and advice. Our health clinic staff are dedicated to providing the highest quality, evidence-based care, and to offer health counseling on a variety of issues.
Most Global Employee Health clinics also provide non-work-related acute episodic health care, including the diagnosis and treatment of minor non-occupational illnesses or injuries, health maintenance counseling and appropriate referral to specialty services. “Lunch and Learn” programs and site-based wellness activities, including walking and weight-reduction programs, are also available at some sites.
Flu shots and vaccinations
Many onsite health clinics around the world also offer non-occupational vaccinations for such diseases as pneumonia, influenza and HPV. In the U.S., our Global Employee Health group provides annual flu shots at no cost to employees at site-based employee health clinics. We also conduct vaccination clinics off-site during our national U.S. field-based team meetings to offer the same level of convenience to our employees who do not work in a headquarters or company worksite.
100 percent of the out of pocket cost of vaccines are covered at participating retail pharmacies under our company’s prescription drug plan. In 2019, we had a 12.5 percent increase in flu shot vaccinations, getting us closer to our 70 percent coverage goal for employees.
We are committed to ensuring the health and safety of our employees who travel on business. Our Global Employee Health group maintains up-to-date information about infectious diseases that are prevalent in all countries and required immunizations. Business travelers are given any required immunizations, information on health conditions in the country of their destination, and additional support to ensure medical care and safety while traveling.
Safe by Choice
The LIVE IT wellbeing team works with our global manufacturing division to advance employee population health through collaborative health promotion, prevention and safety programs. Evidence of the benefits of integrating wellness and safety have been championed by well-regarded organizations such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and the Business Group on Health. Research shows that good physical condition, the absence of chronic disease and good mental health are associated with low occupational injury rates and enable employees to be their personal best. Emotional wellbeing (BALANCE IT)
Today’s professionals are interested in intellectually challenging work, and the opportunity to contribute to company goals, as well as work environments that support and enhance their emotional and social wellbeing.
Because emotional wellbeing is critical to overall wellness, BALANCE IT was a primary focus of our LIVE IT efforts in 2019 and will continue to be throughout 2020. Our company is committed to raising awareness and reducing stigma associated with mental health, creating a positive mental health culture, and improving access to services and support.
We have developed comprehensive, innovative emotional and social wellbeing programs to support our employees at all stages of life. We offer an environment intended to foster employee engagement and team cohesiveness, which leads to reduced absenteeism and increased productivity.
Employee assistance and work-life services
We recognize that our employees’ lives are busy—filled with priorities, commitments and tasks—and that when our employees are doing so much, any challenge—whether big or small—can create stress or disrupt life. “Resources for Living” (available globally in local languages) is our employee assistance and work-life program that supports our employees and family members in all aspects of their lives.
The key services of the program include:
- In-the-moment telephonic support for daily parenting questions, relationship challenges, work issues and everyday stress
- Professional counseling sessions for U.S.-based employees for personal, family or emotional issues (up to five telephonic, face-to-face or video sessions per person per issue)
- Work-life services for everyday help with everyday needs, such as finding assisted living for aging parent(s) or locating a service provider for common household needs
- Crisis support for unanticipated events
- Monthly educational programs on topics such as stress management, balancing work and home, relaxation and sleep
Resources for Living is available at no cost to all employees and their family members worldwide, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is confidential except as required by law.
Mental health awareness
To raise awareness of mental health and our company’s resources and reduce the stigma often associated with it, we began offering voluntary Mental Health First Aid training in 2018 to our employees. This course teaches participants how to notice and support an individual who may be experiencing a mental health or substance abuse concern or crisis in the work environment and help connect them with appropriate employee and community resources. To date, we have 200+ employees trained in Mental Health First Aid within the United States and UK. Once trained, employees are offered the opportunity to become Mind Well Champions whose mission is to create an inclusive and supportive work environment that values overall employee health, focusing on emotional wellbeing. We have over 100 Mind Well Champions.
In 2019, over 700 employees signed the Stamp Out the Stigma Pledge to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and substance abuse disorders.
Financial wellbeing (BALANCE IT)
To assist in financial decision making, we offer all U.S. employees comprehensive financial education and guidance through Ernst & Young at no cost.
Physical fitness (MOVE IT)
Being physically active is an essential component of staying healthy. Through our MOVE IT pillar, our company makes it easier for employees to be more active by integrating fitness into their daily routines. To encourage employees to make fitness a part of their regular schedule, we have fitness centers and walking paths at many of our major sites. In countries where onsite fitness centers are not available, membership fee reimbursement or discounts are provided in accordance with local market practice. We offer access to on-site fitness centers at nine facilities. We had a four percent increase in membership from 2018 to 2019 with over 73,000 visits in 2019. Our active membership (1+ visits/month) was 56 percent.
Twice a year, our company sponsors a Global Wellbeing Challenge to motivate employees to get moving individually or with a team.
As part of our integrated approach to wellbeing, LIVE IT digital supports the full spectrum of LIVE IT by helping employees and their spouses/domestic partners to make healthy, long-lasting behavior changes.
Through a web-based and mobile platform, the tool is designed to raise awareness about an individual’s health status and to motivate participants to manage and improve their health and wellbeing. Employees and spouses/domestic partners can set health goals, track their progress, engage in fitness challenges, find helpful tips and have fun with family and colleagues while earning incentives throughout the year. By engaging in fitness challenges, finding helpful tips and connecting with others, LIVE IT digital helps users turn healthy behaviors into habits and, ultimately, a healthy lifestyle.
Nutrition (FUEL IT)

Healthy food choices
What we eat and drink affects our daily physical and mental wellbeing and our longer-term health and resilience. Through our company’s FUEL IT pillar, we contribute to a healthy work culture by working with our onsite food vendor at most of our U.S. facilities to increase the availability and visibility of healthy food choices and to raise awareness of proper nutrition.
Our food vendor is an integral partner of our LIVE IT team, and we jointly sponsor healthy eating events that correspond with the National Health Calendar. We also provide resources to help employees and their families better understand nutrition and how to achieve a healthy weight. And, employees have access to HMR Health Solutions® at Home, a weight management program provided through HMR Weight Management Services, and discounted WW memberships.
