The following is a selection of awards and recognition received throughout 2019 and in 2020.
Our company’s chairman and CEO, Kenneth Frazier, was named as one of Barron’s top 25 CEOs of 2020, citing his steady leadership through the COVID-19 pandemic and the international response to the killing of George Floyd (June 2020).
Ranked among Corporate Knights’ 2020 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World (January 2020).
Corporate Responsibility Magazine
Ranked #11 across all industries and number one in the pharmaceutical, biotech and life sciences industry on the 21st annual 100 Best Corporate Citizens list, which recognizes environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance of public companies across the United States (June 2020).
Center for Corporate Political Accountability (CPA)
Recognized on the CPA-Zicklin Index of Corporate Political Disclosure and Accountability as a “trendsetter” for corporate disclosures related to political spending (September 2019).
Ranked 18th overall and first in biotech on Fast Company’s 2020 Top 50 Most Innovative Companies list. Fast Company highlighted our efforts combating Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where we delivered more than 250,000 doses of our investigational vaccine and have reduced mortality among exposed patients by at least 88 percent (April 2020).
Named as one of Forbes Global 2000 on the 17th annual Forbes Global 2000 list, which includes publicly traded companies from 60 countries (June 2019).
Since 2008 our company remains a constituent of the FTSE4Good Index. The FTSE4Good Index series measures the performance of companies that meet globally recognized corporate responsibility standards (July 2020).
Our company’s chairman and CEO, Kenneth Frazier, was named to Glassdoor’s list of Top CEOs as part of its 2019 Employees’ Choice Awards. This award puts the spotlight on 100 top leaders who exemplify exceptional vision, trust and communication to employees in North America and parts of Europe (June 2019).
Forbes—in partnership with JUST Capital—analyzed nearly 1,000 U.S. publicly traded companies to determine which have the best and most just business behavior and named our company to the 2019 JUST 100 List. The rankings provide a comprehensive measurement of how U.S. companies perform on the issues Americans care about most (December 2019).
Our company’s efforts on the Ebola virus vaccine were highlighted for ‘changing the course of disease’ in National Geographic’s list of the Top 20 Scientific Discoveries of the Decade (December 2019).
Ranked #20 on Newsweek’s 2020 list of America’s Most Responsible Companies. Using U.S. citizen’s perception of companies’ activities related to corporate social responsibility, this list ranks company performance in the environmental, social, and corporate governance areas (December 2019).

Our company’s work toward development, licensure and sustainable manufacturing of a safe and efficacious Ebola virus vaccine was recognized as one of the Top Ten Scientific Discoveries of the Decade (December 2019).

Named the 19th most innovative company in the GRIT report, which recognizes innovation in insights across industries (July 2019).
National Association for Manufacturing
Received five Manufacturing Leadership Awards at the Manufacturing Leadership Council’s 2019 annual awards ceremony, including top billing as Manufacturer of the Year in the large company category (June 2019).
Recognized by People magazine as one of the top 50 Companies that Care for our efforts through MSD for Mothers to reduce preventable maternal mortality across the globe with education, tools and technologies for healthcare providers and moms. We were the top-ranked pharmaceutical company on the list, coming in 12th place (July 2019).
The American Association of People with Disabilities and Disability (AAPD) and Disability:IN
For the sixth consecutive year, our company was recognized as a Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion, receiving a score of 100 percent on the 2020 Disability Equality Index (DEI). This is the third year that the company has earned a top score in the DEI ratings (July 2020).
American Heart Association (AHA)
Recognized at the gold level on AHA’s 2019 Workplace Health Achievement Index based on organizational best practices and the objective, unbiased science-based assessment of overall workplace heart health (October 2019).
One of 325 companies around the world included in the 2020 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index. The index highlights how companies are advancing women’s equality in the workplace based on four areas: company statistics, policies, community engagement, and products and services (January 2020).
Brandon Hall Group
Honored with the Gold Excellence Award in the Best Unique or Innovative Learning and Development Program in Learning for the MSD Fellowship for Global Health program, our company’s three-month, field-based corporate pro bono program designed to leverage the skills and talents of our employees worldwide (August 2019).
Recognized as the 2020 Employer of the Year for exemplary policies, strategies and initiatives that have resulted in measurable results in the areas of disability inclusiveness in the workplace, marketplace, accessibility, and supply chain both inside the U.S. and internationally (July 2020).
Diversity Best Practices
Our company’s Employee Business Resource Groups (EBRGs) were awarded the Above and Beyond award by Diversity Best Practices, a division of Working Mother Media, for the groups’ significant and measurable impact on corporate culture, business results and society. Two of our company’s EBRGs, the League of Employees of African Descent (LEAD) and the Next Gen Network (NGN), also received the Community Impact Award and the Workforce Impact Award, respectively, for their work to drive positive, powerful change in our organization and across the community (June 2020).
Ranked in the Global Top 100 for gender equality. Equilap researched and ranked over 3,500 global public companies using comprehensive Gender Equality Scorecard™, including the gender balance of the workforce, senior management and board of directors, as well as equal pay, parental leave, non-discriminatory hiring and promotion and supply chain safety (October 2019).
Included on Forbes list of Best Employers for Diversity 2020. Forbes partnered with market research firm Statista to survey employees and highlight America’s best employers for diversity (February 2020).
Ranked fourth (up from #37 last year), Forbes identified the companies most liked by new workforce entrants in its annual America’s Best Employers for New Graduates. Our company was lauded for retaining its entire workforce during the pandemic, including its summer internship program (September 2020).
G.I. Jobs Magazine
Designated as one of the “Military-Friendly Employers” by G.I. Jobs magazine in its 2019 annual survey (September 2019).

Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation
Scored 100 percent and earned the designation as a “Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality” on the HRC Corporate Equality Index. Our company has made the list since 2002, and this is our eighth year in a row we have received a score of 100 percent (January 2020).
Named to Indeed’s list of Top 50 Top-Rated Workplaces to work for in 2019 (July 2019).
National Association for Female Executives (NAFE)
Named as one of the 2020 Top Companies for Executive Women for the 18th time. The award recognizes U.S. corporations where women have significant clout to make the decisions that affect their company’s future and its bottom line (March 2020).

On the list for Best of the Best Corporation for Inclusion by National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) and National Business Inclusion Consortium (NBIC) in the 4th annual cohort of Best-of-the-Best list of corporations in America committed to diversity and inclusion across all communities (March 2019).
The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC)
Awarded the America’s Top Corporations for Women’s Business Enterprises award. Our company was listed among 75 corporations who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to the inclusion of women-owned businesses in their supply chains (January 2020).
Disability:IN, National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce (USPAACC) and WEConnect International named our company as number two on the 2020 annual Top Global Champions for Supplier Diversity & Inclusion. In Puerto Rico our company was recognized for the third time as a 2019 W Certified Company. The Puerto Rico team also celebrated their second consecutive qualification as one of the top five companies preferred by women to work in (November 2019).
American Chemical Society
Recognized with the Green Chemistry Challenge Award for innovative processes in reducing waste and the generation of hazardous materials (October 2019).
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
For the 15th consecutive year, our company was awarded the Energy Star for Partner of the Year: Sustained Excellence for outstanding contributions to protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency achievements (March 2020).

Puerto Rico Minority Supplier Development Council
Awarded the 2019 Corporation of the Year for our company’s implementation of a successful minority supplier program in Puerto Rico (November 2019).
